Maureen Fenner was born in 1955 in Ashford, a market town in south-east Kent. She contracted polio at the age of three months and as a result both of her arms and her left hand were paralysed. She also lost most of the use of her right hand and her legs were severely weakened by the virus. From the age of three to 16 years she was educated and cared for at Chailey Heritage, a specialised school in East.
